About us
Film and television are at the heart of our vibrant contemporary culture, the ways that we represent ourselves and our world, and the images and stories we tell about it. They also comprise an incredibly important part of the creative industries both here in the UK and across the globe. Their study offers rich insights into their role in our society and how they make meaning, and equip you with the skills and knowledge for a broad range of careers in this field and beyond.
Exeter Film and Television Studies is taught by world-leading academics. Our commitment to innovative teaching has made us one of the top-rated programmes in the UK in the league table rankings. Our stimulating programmes, supported by world-class resources and research-led teaching, will give you new perspectives on film, television and visual culture. Our partnership with the prestigious London Film School contributes to our distinctive postgraduate degrees at both MA and PhD level.
There is a strong emphasis on interdisciplinarity within our work, and with creative industry engagement and impact. We have broad expertise across film and television history and theory, and in film practice, with our work in the areas of gender and feminism, production histories, exhibition and audiences, and transnational cinema being recognised with a number of major research grant awards.
Our research and teaching are supported by the outstanding collections of the The Bill Douglas Cinema Museum, offering an incredible wealth of film-related materials, such as artefacts, papers and books, and giving Exeter the largest library on the moving image in any British University. Our Bill Douglas Cinema offers state of the art sound and image for screenings. Students also benefit from the on-site Digital Humanities Lab with access to its 3D scanning equipment and our Department video and audio recording facilities.
