Women and Children First

Author: James Chester
Director: James Chester
Location: RS3  Roborough Studios, Prince of Wales Road, Postcode: EX4 4SB  Show on Map

A ship is wrecked, claimed by the frigid waters of The Cape of Good Hope. It is 1852, two naval officials by order of the British government make the long cold journey to the Southernmost tip of Africa.

Between the smoky boards of an old tavern, the usuals patrons arrive. Vulgar, repressed and increasingly inebriated. They do not take well to the two British strangers who fling questions regarding a sunken ship and display unsubtle insults to the ethnicity of their hosts.

As the storm rages through the night so do the bar's patrons. Talks of ships soon turn to arguments of land, race and gender. Oppressors hide in the guise of victims and volume smothers the fragility of language. What begins as creeping leaks of prejudice becomes a typhoon of ignorance that threatens all in its wake.

The Magical Screentest of Isobel Jeffrey

Presented by: Four of Swords Theatre Company
Location: Screening TheatrePostcode: EX4 4LA  Show on Map

A disarmingly honest self-portrait of aspiring actor Isobel Jeffery: the heroic, poignant tale of how Isobel has worked to overcome learning disabilities and health problems, and how she is fighting now to realise her dream of being an actor.

The show takes the form of a conversation between Isobel and cartoonish film producer Mr Hollywood Big Bucks, played by Phil Kingslan John from Four of Swords. Their interview is punctuated with demonstrations of the tactics Isobel has developed to learn scripts, a mind-bending quiz on world mythology and some short films of skits and sketches, all created from the wonderfully wacky imagination of Isobel Jeffery.

Live Performance Matters - Launch Event

Location: TS1  Alexander Building, Thornlea, New North Road, Postcode: EX4 4LA  Show on Map

Live Performance Matters is a new research centre in Drama, within the Department of Communications, Drama and Film at the University of Exeter. The centre platforms research into live performance across art forms, geographies, and histories.

Our launch event will fizz with ideas and celebration. Drama staff and affiliated researchers will offer a series of short responses in different formats to the question:

'(Why) does live performance matter now?' sparking conversation about the current value of live performance and the importance of research into it.

The spirit of live performance will animate the occasion, with improvised contributions from musicians EMMA WELTON and ROZ HARDING.
