Social Media and Events Committee

Shape the Communications programme by getting involved with our events and social media teams!

In addition to all of the fantastic range of media and communications-focused student societies on offer at the University, the Communications programme has a student-led Social Media and Events Committee.

The Social Media Team are responsible for creating and posting regular content across the programme’s social channels

The Events Team develop, promote and run social events for the cohort of Communications students.

Getting involved with the Social Media and Events Committee can provide you with a valuable opportunity to develop a range of transferrable skills (and can also count towards you work experience!):

  • Event and activity ideation
  • Social media management and strategy
  • Campaign development
  • Events planning and promotion
  • Marketing
  • Research (e.g. through surveying the student body to see what social events they would like)
  • Team-work

Early on every academic year we provide you with a social media training session run by  a communications professional from the University’s social media services team. It is compulsory that students on the Committee receive this training because it provides you with important information about conduct, policy and GDPR.

The Committee is always open to new members so if you are interested don’t hesitate to reach out to one of your lecturers who will put you in touch with the relevant team member.

SSLC – Represent your programme

We are committed to enabling all students to communicate their views and to receiving suggestions to influence changes to our policies and procedures. The Staff-Student Liasson Committee (SSLC) provides students with an opportunity to share feedback about their course with members of staff on a termly basis.

Student SSLC reps ensure the voices of their peers are heard, listened to, and acted upon. As an SSLC rep you collect views and opinions from students about their programme. You will also work with staff to ensure specific feedback is addressed, creating solutions and encourage positive change for the student experience. The SSLC rep position equips you with a rich set of transferrable skills that will provide you with valuable material to draw on when applying for jobs or further study.

The SSLC is presided over by a Subject Officer (a student elected by the Students’ Guild) and composed of elected student representatives from each year and programme and appropriate staff representatives. Training for Subject Officers is provided by the Students’ Guild. A standard agenda is provided by the Taught Faculty, and minute-taking is provided by the discipline Administrator.

Code of Good Practice for SSLCs.

If you are interested in becoming a representative for the UG SSLC please sign up to volunteer through the Students' Guild website.

Filmmaking Workshops

The Communications programme run practical filmmaking workshops with experienced media professionals. These provide students with opportunities to develop their technical skills (camera, sound, editing, storytelling) using industry standard equipment and our multimedia studio.

Student Ambassador Scheme

The Exeter Student Ambassador Scheme (ESAS) is managed by the Student Recruitment Office (SRO). Student ambassadors are booked by the SRO and other university departments to work on a wide range of events and activities throughout the year. They share their first-hand experiences of life as a University of Exeter student to a variety of different audiences, providing a positive, authentic and unscripted insight into the world of higher education. The work student ambassadors undertake involves both promoting the University of Exeter as an institution to prospective students and visitors; and helping to widen participation in higher education more generally by providing information, advice and guidance to young people from a diverse range of backgrounds who are under-represented.

This is a great scheme to join if you:

  • feel positive about higher education and the University of Exeter and want to share your experiences with others
  • like to work with young people and recognise that they may need help in making important decisions regarding higher education
  • want flexible work that fits well around your study commitments
  • want work that will enhance your existing skillset and increase your employability (student ambassadors will have their work with ESAS listed on their Higher Education Achievement Report and may use their work on the scheme to gain the Exeter Award

If possible, we are looking to recruit student ambassadors from all undergraduate courses and year groups, plus a range of postgraduate courses. Student ambassadors should:

  • be enthusiastic
  • have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of people from different backgrounds
  • be brilliant team workers
  • be professional, well organised and reliable
  • be pro-active and able to use their own initiative to respond to different situations appropriately
  • be current undergraduate or postgraduate students at the University of Exeter

Work is available for student ambassadors throughout the year. We encourage student ambassadors to apply for regular work on the scheme. The work hours are flexible and it should be possible for student ambassadors to choose shifts that fit comfortably around their study commitments, as well as link with the areas of work that they are most interested in.

For more information, including information about how to apply, please see the ESAS webpage
